IR Smoke is a ground vehicle specialization available to Main Battle Tanks, IFVs, Mobile Anti-Air Vehicles, Mobile Artillery Vehicles and Tank Destroyers. "Smoke grenades enhanced with metal filaments that when launched remove laser-designation, spoof incoming guided missiles, and prevent enemies from revealing your position to teammates." It does not function on fast attack vehicles, naval vessels, or Quad Bikes, as none of them have any defensive systems in place. On tanks it has a cooldown of 15 seconds before it can be used again, while with helicopters the cooldown is 10 seconds. This is an active specialization, meaning it can only be used by the driver of the vehicle, and it must be activated by user input to function. This specialization also removes any planted tracer darts on the vehicle, removing the ability for players using the Engineer kit (or flying attack helicopters with the Alternate Weapon Package) to lock onto the vehicle until another dart has been planted. When activated, it fires a 360-degree smokescreen around a tank, deploys flares from an attack or transport helicopter, or deploys a volley of four smoke grenades from the UAV-1. It is triggered by using the alternate fire button. The Smoke Countermeasures Package is a vehicle Specialization featured in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, obtained after acquiring 6,500 experience points with any vehicle or stationary weapon emplacement. It obscures equipment and personnel from aimed enemy fire." When fired it generates a 360 degree smoke screen around the vehicle. "A smoke grenade system consisting of 6 launchers. Smokescreen disappears after some seconds and reloading takes some more time, so it is advised to use carefully and effectively, and best advised for tactical purposes, like for distraction or providing cover to teammates. Also, laser-guided AGMs from Strike Aircrafts can still lock on to the vehicle even if you have deployed a smokescreen. That being said, you are still vulnerable to all missiles as the smokescreen does not disable or destroy the missile or rocket. It also makes it harder for anti-tank wielding crew to aim at precisely. This is useful in providing cover while retreating or to give cover for infantry around. They provide a temporary cover around the vehicle for some seconds. IR smoke is a standard feature for all Main Battle Tanks and Infantry Fighting Vehicles in the game.
